Richmond River Fest - Waterway processes in action: Shannon Brook field trip

Journey to the Shannon Brook sub-catchment to see waterway processes in action. Led by Alluvium Consulting in partnership with a local landholder, we’ll travel by minibus from Kyogle to Bingeebeebra Creek and Simpkins Creek (near Mummulgum) to explore:

• Waterway management issues typical of the upper Richmond River catchment

• Why it matters

• What we can do about it

The minibus will depart from Kyogle (meet at Visitors Centre Carpark, Anzac Drive) at 9 am sharp and return at 12 pm. 

This event is recommended for landholders, waterway management practitioners and curious folk alike.

Why Shannon Brook?

Active geomorphic processes within Shannon Brook and its tributaries are generating some of the highest sediment loads in the Richmond River catchment, impacting water quality and aquatic habitat, and contributing to a loss of agricultural land and riparian habitat.

On the bus trip (approx. 40 mins), Alluvium staff will provide background information to set the scene before visiting two sites on Bingeebeebra Creek and Simpkins Creek, where we will look at waterway processes in action and discuss how land and waterway management approaches influence waterway health. A local landholder practising holistic grazing management, will also share their experience and insights.

We hope you’ll come away from the morning with a greater understanding of:

• physical waterway processes

• the connection between land management practices and waterway health, and

• appropriate management approaches to improve waterway health.

By sharing these insights, we can work together to improve the health of our waterways at a local and catchment scale.
