Have you ever marvelled at the ethereal sounds of the Shakuhachi Flute (Japan), or the South American Quena Flute?
In this workshop, Sunshine Coast Based Musician and Flute Maker, Troy Chapman, takes a small group of students through the basics of how to get a reliable sound out of these rim-blown flutes. The workshop is located on a beautiful property in the Noosa Hinterland & we will have plenty of space to sit under a tree and find our sweet spot with the flutes during regular practice breaks.

Some things you will Learn / Experience:
How to get a sound out of these style mouthpieces (can be adapted to any rim blown flute),
How to connect with your instrument and strategies for practice, Finger positions and tips to avoid fatigue and get a reliable seal on the holes
How to breath from the diaphragm,
Getting a reliable note from the 2nd octave of the flute (Once you get the initial sound)

The Flutes:

In this workshop, we will be learning on a "Hybrid" style flute which gives a beginner / intermediate player the maximum chance to improve. The mouthpiece of the flute is based on a South American Quena Flute, which is easier to get a sound on than the Shakuhachi Style flute. The scale of the flute is a 5 note minor scale based on the Japanese Shakuhachi. All flutes have been made by Troy.
Flutes Provided
A set of PVC flutes are available to use in the workshop, and a range of bamboo flutes will be available for purchase on the day.
Troy has designed the mouthpieces of the flutes in Quena Style and they are quite easy to get a sound compared with traditional quena and Shakuhachi Flute.

A small hand-mirror if you have one
A Card / Bank Transfer, or some Cash to purchase flutes on the day. Please note that $20 will be deducted from any full price flute purchase for your participation in the workshop. There will be a small discount on sale prices for cash payments. Flute prices range from $100 to $280.
Flutes will be available to practice on during the workshop as part of the ticket price.
About Troy:
Troy has been playing flute for over 15 years & has performed in Sound Journeys, Recorded Tracks, and taught different styles of flute since 2016. Troy is an experienced teacher of Flute, tin whistle, & didgeridoo and is skilled at matching his instruction with the needs of the students.
