Rising Appalachia

risingappalachia.com

"Rising Appalachia is an internationally touring folk ensemble steeped in the soul of the South. It is the brainchild of Atlanta-raised sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, rooted in the rich musical traditions of their family and their journey into song as performers, writers, and song catchers. They have that touch that only siblings can have. And now, fresh off the press, they present their first album of cover songs Folk & Anchor, a carefully curated collection of remakes. From Bob Dylan to Hoizer, Erykah Badu to Beyonce, hear these songs in a voice uniquely their own. Recorded at Echo Mountain in Asheville North Carolina, the band has leaned into new renditions of old favorites, showcasing their wide range of style and sound.

Rising Appalachia makes music as a reflection of their times, blending Americana music with lyrics, rhythm and poetry of our times. The band's unique sound was shaped by Leah and Chloe's soulful vocals, simple instrumentation, and seamless harmonies, unique to siblings steeped in the multi-generational music of the South. They are joined by a host of incredible musicians who bring their own cultural influences, enriching the blend of Appalachian, Irish, Americana, Latin and world roots music that defines the smooth sound of Rising Appalachia.

Fronted by Leah and Chloe, and featuring full-time members David Brown(upright bass, baritone guitar), Duncan Wickel (fiddle, cello), and Biko Casini (drums and percussion), expect to be swooned into a tapestry of silky sounds.Their journey has taken them around the world, from sailboat tours across British Columbia to street theater festivals in Southern Italy, a full-time busking career in New Orleans, and traditional song studies in Ireland, Bulgaria, Latin America, and beyond." EVENT & VENUE INFO:

CATHEDRALS CONCERTS SERIES

Abbey Arts is an independent non-religious nonprofit founded in 2005.
We curate venues & events around Seattle in historic buildings like Fremont Abbey, Ballard Homestead, Woodlawn Hall and more.  http://www.fremontabbey.org/cathedrals

We have been hosting these special concert events at St Mark's Episcopal Cathedral since 2011.  We create an open floor concert experience, quiet picnics welcome, no outside alcohol allowed. Seating available including chairs, benches, and some floor space around the stage area.

We recommend bringing cushions and even blankets if you'd like.

Audience can sit anywhere around the stage as space allows (floor space is not reserved - select GA ticket and arrive early). Please do not take up more space than needed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • St Mark's is ADA Accessible. Wheelchair seating area is to the left of stage near the front.(Email boxoffice@fremontabbey.org with questions)
  • Service animals as defined by the ADA are allowed. Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.
  • We are an all ages venue. Kids 10 & under are free at most Abbey Arts events. Be sure to select a kids free ticket when purchasing.
  • St. Mark's has a pay-to-park lot. More parking information is available here.  Free street parking around the area.
    • Do not block fire lanes or you will be towed.

SEATING:

  • Open GA seating (and standing in back) except reserved front rows where noted
  • To create a "giant living room" effect we offer an unusual concert experience with informal seating on the floor up front surrounding the stage and lots of pews, benches, and chairs around the space.  Floor space is not reserved. Arrive early!
  • We highly recommend you bring blankets and cushions to create a more comfortable experience whether sitting on the floor or seats. Quiet and non-messy snacks/picnics are allowed. No outside alcohol.
  • For best sound, arrive early for center floor area and any area on stage not marked with signage. You can also sit all around the back of the stage if you like but sound will be a bit limited there.

QUIET POLICY:

  • Please silence all devices. Turn off vibrate, rings, etc. If you need your phone on vibrate for specific reasons, please keep it close to you and not on a hard surface that will distract your neighbor.
  • If arriving late, please be advised that ushers may hold doors during each song due to acoustics of the space.
  • Please refrain from talking during the performances.
  • Please enter quietly if the show has already begun.
  • NO CAMERAS WITH MECHANICAL SHUTTERS (This goes for Press too unless approved to photograph during applause only.) That means silent digital cameras/photos are ok but we really recommend you enjoy most of the show through your own 'retina screens'.
  • Anyone exhibiting loud or disruptive behavior during the event will be asked to leave.
  • **We are unable to provide a separate soundproof room for viewing this event. These shows are sometimes very very pin drop quiet so please consider that when deciding what ages are appropriate. No cry room available at this venue and even voices in the lobby will be heard in the concert space. Thank you for understanding.
