Join us for our inaugural Screening Series at Riverlution Café, as we take advantage of the longer nights to bring you an outdoor film experience not to be missed! Featuring films from home and abroad, this series aims to inspire hope, encourage community conversation, and shed light on ways that we can all contribute to making this world a better place for the next generation - while warming your heart in the process.
Each evening will bring you a different film (or films), free of charge, while our café operates as normal so you can enjoy a hot chocolate or Kai while you watch. Each film will also feature a special host with a keen interest in what's being shown, there to share with your their passion and enthusiasm!
Keep an eye on our fortnightly Lineup to see what's showing and when; bring the tamariki or make a date night out of it! We'll provide blankets and cushions, drink and snack options, and uplifting entertainment. All you need to bring is yourselves 🙂

The Idol, April 17th, hosted by Riverlution Café Senior Barista Jenna Kelly
"Mohammad Assaf is a young man with grand aspirations. A wedding singer from a refugee camp, he dreams of singing in the famed Cairo Opera House before a huge and appreciative audience. But growing up in the densely populated and volatile strip of Gaza, dreams seem more like ants escaping the weather. Determined to share his voice with the world he seeks to infiltrate the hotel where performers are assembling for the current Arab Idol television show. Ready or not, the world will hear Mohammad's voice and in turn open its hearts to his most remarkable talent. Rated PG, contains very mild violence." This screening will include a Koha bucket in aid of families in Gaza supported by Falasteen Film Society Ōtautahi
Wahine Waveriders, May 1st, hosted by Riverlution Café Cultivator Clí Allen
"In the tiny, coastal town of Riverton tucked behind sheep filled paddocks and wind blown trees you’ll find a small, but thriving surf community. Wāhine Waveriders is a documentary celebrating 3 generations of the Pou family women and their unique relationship with surf culture on the South Island. The film explores their personal connection to the ocean and celebrates its profound impact on physical and emotional recovery. Through the lens of womanhood across three generations, this film is not just about surfing; it's about the power of community and nature to heal and unite. It's a testament to the human spirit, showing how the relentless force of the ocean mirrors the resilience of these women, inspiring viewers to find their own paths to healing and empowerment."
Think Like A Forest, May 1st, hosted by Richmond Community Garden volunteer Molly Magid
"Think Like A Forest is a powerful short film that brings the vision of Recloaking Papatūānuku to life — a bold, science-led initiative to restore, regenerate, enhance and manage over two million hectares of native forests and wetlands across Aotearoa in the next 30 years. Hunter, fisher and conservationist Sam the Trap Man, speaks to kaitiaki already doing this work on the ground, and presents a vision for a regenerative future in which we take action to create resilience for our land and communities. Most of all, Think Like A Forest is an invitation into action, and a demonstration of how ordinary people can make a difference in their own community."
Living The Change, May 15th, hosted by Richmond Community Garden Coordinator Rachel Oliver
"Living the Change is a feature-length documentary that showcases individual and collective responses to the global crises we face today – highlighting solutions any one of us can be part of and offering inspiring stories of people pioneering change in their own lives and in their communities in order to live in a sustainable and regenerative way. From forest gardens to composting toilets, community supported agriculture to timebanking, Living the Change offers ways we can rethink our approach to how we live."
Mauri, May 29th - CANCELLED
"Mauri is a cinematic invitation into the healing traditions of Aotearoa, a journey carried by Māori healers, elders, and knowledge keepers who tend to intergenerational wounds through land, language, and ceremony. Filmed in close relationship with those who carry ancestral wisdom, Mauri reveals how healing is not an individual pursuit but a collective remembering – guided by spirit, whenua (land), and the relational threads that colonial disruption could not sever. With breathtaking imagery and intimate storytelling, the film brings us into the spaces where trauma is not “treated” but held, where stories, prayers, medicines, and rituals offer pathways back to connection. Mauri does not explain Māori healing. It moves with it – listening to what still pulses beneath silence, and honoring what remains alive in the hands of those who never forgot."
