Save our species - Riverland Field Days

Join us at the Riverland Field Days “save our species” stall, where we will engage with and educate community members about local threatened species.
YEL students will have the opportunity to help run the stall including conducting short surveys and giving out free local native plants. Our efforts on the day will contribute to projects helping to save local threatened species such as regent parrots, Murray-Darling carpet python and pink cockatoos.

Friday 13 September 2024
Site 307-309, Riverland Field Days, Barmera.
YEL forum 10 am - 2 pm
Please ensure students have recess/morning tea on the way to the YEL location ready for forum start at 10 am.
Water for drink bottles and sunscreen will be provided.

Cost: Free. This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.
Teachers in attendance will receive free entry into the Riverland Field Days.

Prior to YEL day - early in term 3 school groups will be provided with the following:
• information about 3 local threatened species. Students are asked to learn about these species
• materials and information to make signs to promote the plant stall and ‘save our species’
• access to the online survey(s) that we will be asking community members to complete. Schools can load these onto ipads OR will be provided printed copies on the day.
On YEL day:
Students will be rostered in shifts (in their school groups) to work at the “save our species” stall(s) where we will engage with and educate community members about local threatened species. Students will be conducting short surveys and handing out free native plants.
When not working at the stall(s), students will be handing out information flyers and/or will have free time to explore the field days.
Anticipated program:
9:45 am Arrive at Riverland Field Days site 307-309
Map and YEL meeting location will be provided.
10:00 am Welcome, overview of the day. Split into groups and get to work.
10:30 am - 11:15 am - shift 1
11:15 am - 12:00 pm - shift 2
12:00 pm - 12:45 pm - shift 3
12:45 pm - 1:15 pm - shift 4
1:30 pm - gather back at YEL meeting place for re-cap and sharing at school.
2:00 pm YEL Close.
*shift times and lengths may change - final timetable will be shared prior to YEL day.
** school groups not on shift will have other activities and free time to explore the field days.

More information:
Please wear hats and weather-appropriate clothes for the day. Enclosed shoes are advised for all attendees.
BYO refillable water bottles, morning tea and packed lunch.
Schools are asked to ensure students eat recess/morning tea on the way to YEL location so event can start
on time.
School groups will have the opportunity to freely explore the field days. The School or supervising teacher will be responsible for establishing how students will conduct themselves, including the option for spending money, at the field days.
In the event of thunderstorms, heavy/prolonged rainfall or catastrophic weather forecast for the day, this event will be cancelled.
Please bring signed photo consent forms for all in attendance if you have not returned them already.
Registered schools will be provided with final map and information on meeting location and requirements
for the day.
