"How this came about it Michael Cracroft from Southern Lights approached me and said, for his significant birthday that is coming up, he wanted to give back to the incredible Ōtepoti all ages music scene. He offered the Southern Lights yard and all the staging, production, crew and everything needed for the artists to put on an outdoor music fest with space for a big audience. Such an incredibly generous gesture.

The criteria was, the bands are rangatahi, and have been contributing heavily to the all-ages scene. The musicians were offered the opportunity to design what sort of show they would like to do and the idea to Rock The Vote came up quickly. And here we are.

Another aspect is the very accessible ticket pricing. Michael also said from the start that 100% of the ticket income would go to the musicians. The good hearts of the members of this music community are keeping the ticketing as low as possible so everyone can come along and aren’t expecting to make money from this.

This is therefore a good opportunity to talk about supporting artists in NZ right now. As in, how little support there is from, well anywhere for Ōtepoti musicians.

So for these performers, at the ticket site there is also a donation button, where - if you are able - you can donate as you buy your ticket and that will go to the musicians. Everyone performing has an important project happening, and not one of them is receiving financial support from any music industry grants, government grants, nor local council grants / investment. So here’s your chance to support our musicians directly, while they once again work hard to fight for yet another important cause.”
