Event description

Child of Society acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional custodians of the lands and waterways in the area that the workshop and exhibition takes place. As we craft and discuss connections to land, environment and culture, please always consider the strong connection to land that continues to be an important part of First Nations connection to country and culture.

Explore the world of indigo dye through this workshop as part of the exhibition Roots: Crafting Connections to Place. This exhibition explores how design and craft can be utilised to deepen our connection to place.

This workshop will be hosted and run by Child of Society (Celina Samarakoon). Her work explores how place shapes culture and identity, weaving together her Japanese and Sri Lankan heritage with her upbringing in Far North Queensland. By focusing on the environment as the source of cultural motifs, her pieces suggest that a deeper connection to the land can foster an understanding of culture and heritage. By employing natural dye techniques that have been sustainably practiced for thousands of years, she builds an ongoing relationship with the lands, seas and traditions that shape her. She has recently returned from a trip to Sri Lanka, where she learnt batik (wax resist) techniques. She also participated in the Learning Indigo Course through Tokushima Rotary at BUAISOU (Tokushima, Japan).

Participants are invited to learn and try the traditional indigo dye techniques of Batik (wax resist), Mujizome (plain dye) and Shibori. Each participant will take home naturally dyed pieces.
