Event description
Michael Hill is a former Chief Magistrate of Tasmania. He retired in 2015 after a 45 year legal career the last 30 of which he served as Magistrate, Deputy Chief Magistrate and Chief Magistrate. In 2017 he was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania.
Michael is the Chair of the Just Desserts Drug Court Support Group. Just Desserts was formed in 2018 to assist and complement the work of the Court Mandated Drug (CMD) treatment program of the Magistrates Court. It works toward positive outcomes for CMD clients and positive interactions between offenders and the rest of the Tasmanian community.
He is also a Tasmanian Patron of the Justice Reform Initiative, an alliance of people with professional experience, lived experience or expert knowledge of the justice system who believe that alternative approaches to justice are needed to end an overreliance on incarceration.
Michael will speak on ways to arrest patterns of criminality thereby better protecting the community.
