The Renters' Rights Rundown: Rent increases
Event description
The Renters Rights Rundown: Rent increases
Sky-rocketing rents are one of the biggest challenges facing Victorian renters right now.
State and territory governments are looking at ways to ease the pressure for renters, with many looking to follow the path Victoria has taken to make renting fairer and safer. Amidst all the public discussion about renting, we know it can be hard to make sense of what’s already in place to support Victorian renters.
More than 130 changes to Victoria’s renting rules came into effect on 29 March 2021, including changes to strengthen the rent increase framework, by:
- Limiting rent increases to only once per year
- Ending “no reason” notices to vacate, meaning renters can only be evicted in very specific circumstances.
VCOSS is holding an online sector briefing for workers wanting to learn more about the rent increase framework under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997.
VCOSS will be joined by Ben Cording, Lead Community Education Lawyer at Tenants Victoria, who will answer any questions you have about renters’ rights and navigating the system if a renter you support faces a rent increase.
This session is free and open to all, but designed for community sector workers who provide information, advice and assistance to renters in Victoria.
Update on Auslan
Due to high demand, Victoria is experience a shortage of Auslan interpreters. VCOSS strives to ensure our events are inclusive to everyone and will do our best to secure Auslan interpreters on the day. To help us do this, if you require Auslan for this event, please RSVP as soon as possible so that we can work with Expression Australia to secure interpreters.
We work towards creating a Victoria that is fair, just and inclusive. A society where nobody is trapped by poverty, and everybody is supported to live a life of wellbeing.
