Thu, 10 Jul, 6pm - 8pm ACST

Event description

The Royal Society of South Australia is pleased to invite you to our July meeting and scientific presentation.

The Coorong is a Ramsar-listed, internationally significant wetland system which includes Lakes Alexandrina and Albert, as well as 23 different wetland types, spanning a considerable portion of South Australia's south-eastern coastline. We are very happy to have three guest speakers, presenting up-to-date scientific knowledge and ongoing research into this complex system.

The seminar, titled, What "worms" can tell us about the state of the Coorong, will be given by three speakers Sabine Dittmann, Josh Nitschke and Laura Schoder, all from Flinders University.

What “worms” can tell you about the state of the Coorong

This seminar will cover the ecological relevance of macroinvertebrates in the Murray Mouth estuary and Coorong lagoons, their response to flow over the barrages and how this can inform water management. You will also hear about the potential of macroinvertebrates to remediate sediment conditions. Further parts of the talk will cover the trophic ecology, as macroinvertebrates are food for many shorebirds and fish. You will also hear about the reefs build by tubeworms in the Coorong and their associated fish community. The seminar will be given by Sabine Dittmann, Josh Nitschke and Laura Schoder, Flinders University.

The Evening

The event will begin at 6:00 pm with nibbles, refreshments and opportunities for pre-meeting discussions and networking. A small donation to the RSSA is greatly appreciated to partake in this and support the continued provision of these pre-meeting treats.
