The Russell Family Jazz Show
Description
The Russell Family Jazz Quartet - a celebrated Australian jazz dynasty - brings world-class, mainstream jazz to the stage. Siblings Sharny (vocals), Steve (piano) and Helen (bass) have performed together since childhood, inheriting a rich lineage from their mother Peg - a celebrated pianist famously praised by Don Burrows as sounding like Bill Evans.
Joined in this concert by prominent local drummer Nathan Goldman, this group will deliver compelling original works, refined solo musicianship, joyful vocal harmonies, and their unique musical rapport.
Each sibling holds a distinguished place in the Australian music industry:
• Sharny Russell (Armidale): APRA Jazz Award winner and ABC Jazz recording artist. Renowned for vocal/piano improvisation, she has released numerous original recordings, two acclaimed albums with guitarist George Golla, and has shared the stage with James Morrison, Vince Jones, and Grace Knight.
• Steve Russell (Northern Rivers): A premier pianist, accompanist, and award-winning composer whose 40-year career includes collaborations with Dan Sultan, Tom Burlinson, and Monica Trapaga. His albums were praised as "state of the art," and his directorships include QPAC’s Songs of Justice and Queensland Music Festival shows.
• Helen Russell (Brisbane): A first-choice bassist for elites like Molly Ringwald, Monica Trapaga, and Andrea Keller. Her career spans orchestral pit work for major musicals and serving as musical director for Queensland Theatre and La Boite.
