Description

RUSU Presents:

Zong Zi Making Workshop with Delilah, Jun Qiao and their Mum!

Join us to learn about the origins of perhaps the worlds first 'fast food', and learn how to make delicious mushroom, and sweet red bean Zong Zi.

Zong Zi (粽子) are traditional Chinese sticky-rice parcels, made by wrapping glutinous rice and various sweet or savoury fillings in bamboo leaves before steaming. They are traditionally enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival and vary widely across different regions and cultures.

You might also know them as: Phet htok (Burmese), nom chang (Khmer/Cambodian), machang (Filipino), bacang (Indonesian), khanom chang (Lao), ba chang (Lao/Thai), bánh ú tro (Vietnamese), bánh tro (Vietnamese), bakcang (Hokkien), zang (Hokkien), kueh chang (Peranakan/Baba Malay)

We will be making vegetarian varieties of the Zong- one with red bean, and one with mushrooms.
We will provide all ingredients and materials, including glutinous rice, bamboo leaves, wrapping string, and fillings.

Attendance of the workshop includes taking home your own zong zi with instructions on how to cook them at home, and there will be tea, snacks and pre-cooked Zong to sample!

Duration:

90 minute hands on workshop (drop in and out of the session as it makes sense for you if you have class before or after)

What we'll cover:

  • Ingredients and method to make your own zong

  • Wrapping the lotus leaves + string tying technique

  • History of Zong Zi and the Dragon Boat Festival and introduction to Chinese calligraphy!
