Safe + Affirmed: Working with LGBTIQA+ Children and Young People Training at Inner West Pride Centre, Sydney

Safe + Affirmed is a full day training for clinicians, mental health workers, disability workers, community services, health science professionals and others who work with LGBTIQA+ young people who want to increase their skills and knowledge in how to provide safer and more affirming care for LGBTIQA+ young people. This training was informed by the expertise of Twenty10's Client Services Team who support LGBTIQA+ young people with counselling, case management, transitional housing and FSDV care coordination support. Previously, this training was delivered to CAMHS services across New South Wales.
In the session, we will cover the following topics:
- LGBTIQA+ foundations and language
- Understanding the needs and experiences of gender diverse communities
- clinical practice for working with LGBTIQA+ young
- Eating disorders and Neurodivergence in our communities
- Advocacy and allyship
After this training, participants will:
- Understand the LGBTIQA+ acronym, unpacking language and terms like gender, sexuality, sex characteristics and identity;
- Recognise realities for LGBTIQA+ populations - current leading research, social and health impacts of discrimination, stigma, microaggressions;
- Gain affirmative practice tools to create a culture that is safer for LGBTIQA+ people to be themselves. We talk about things like inclusive verbal and visual language, pronouns, allyship and advocacy.
- Identify gaps in LGBTIQA+ equity and culture within your service or organisational practices;
- Identify resources and services to use with clients and workers;
- Develop ways to transform learnings into action as you discuss applications within your specific environments.
Note this is a full day training from 9:30am- 4:00pm. Lunch is catered (pls provide your dietary requirements on checkout) and tea and coffee is provided also.
