Event description

Women with Disabilities Victoria (WDV) and Safe and Equal have partnered to produce a suite of eLearn Modules to enhance practice capability of practitioners supporting victim survivors with disabilities. This event is centred around the launch of the first module: ‘Unlearning Ableism: from Bias to Best Practice’.

The ‘Unlearning Ableism: from Bias to Best Practice’ eLearn aims to build practitioner’s understanding of the concepts of unconscious bias and ableism, and how ableist attitudes impact people with disabilities, specifically victim survivors of family violence.

This event will introduce practitioners to this first foundational eLearn, providing context and promotion of the ongoing project and an opportunity to hear from the family violence and disability experts who contributed to the eLearn. The event aims to strengthen practitioner’s capacity to recognise and challenge bias and ableism and promote a safe, inclusive and equitable service system response to victim survivors with disabilities.

About the event

The event will take place online via Zoom in a webinar format. Attendees will be able to interact with the webinar using the Q&A and Chat functions on Zoom. Attendees will not be able to use their microphone or camera during the webinar. The launch of the eLearn resource will be preceded by presentations from the Family Violence and Disability Practice Leaders on the work that they are doing to promote a safe, inclusive and equitable service system for victim survivors with disabilities.  Following the launch event, the eLearn will be available online on the WDV and Safe and Equal websites.

Audience

This event (and associated eLearn module) is aimed at all practitioners who work with victim survivors with disabilities, including those in the family violence, sexual assault, disability, and other community services.

Location and Accessibility

The eLearn Launch will be held online via zoom. This event will go for 90 minutes with a 10-minute break.

Auslan interpreters will be attending this event. Zoom Automatic Captions are available and can be accessed by clicking the “CC” button at the bottom of your screen during the webinar.

Access requirements can be requested at the time of registration, or by contacting the event organiser.

Questions for the guest speakers can be submitted at the time of registration, or by using the Q&A and/or chat function on Zoom.

Access Key

This event will be held online via Zoom in a webinar format. Zoom webinars look different to a regular Zoom call, because only the presenters and facilitator can use their cameras and microphones, and there is no ‘chat’ function. You will not be able to turn on your camera or use your microphone during the event. This webinar will be recorded, but your face and name will not be visible.

You can submit your questions for the Q&A session either by using the ‘Q&A’ function on Zoom, or when you register for the event using the online registration form.

The Zoom link will be sent to the email address you use on this form. You will also receive a link to an evaluation survey after you attend the webinar.

There will be one 10-minute break scheduled around the middle of the webinar. You are encouraged to take additional breaks as you need them. If you need to exit the webinar, you can return if/when you are ready or watch the recording at a later date.

Content warning

This webinar and associated eLearn module discuss themes of family violence and disability discrimination, which might impact people differently. We recognise that the content ahead may be challenging and encourage you to prioritise self-care. If you need support, this list of services is available. You are encouraged to take breaks and/or exit the webinar if needed.

The organiser’s contact number will be provided on the day, so you can contact them if you have any questions or concerns.

Evaluation

There will be an evaluation survey forwarded to you after the webinar. This will be sent out to the email address that you used to register for the event. We ask that you please complete this survey so we can understand what worked well, what we could have done better, and what other subjects you are interested in learning more about.
