Please join us for our Safe Spaces Symposium

You are invited to the Safe Spaces Symposium, which highlights best practices in creating safe spaces for LGBTIQA+ young people in Western Australia. The event is aimed at anyone who wants to learn about how to better support LGBTIQA+ young people, including community workers, educators, and parents. Participants are welcome in person or online.

This event is hosted by WAAC’s Freedom Project in partnership with Curtin University’s Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) Project.

The principal sponsor of the event is the Commissioner for Children and Young People.

Speakers will include the Commissioner for Children and Young People and representatives from organisations including Curtin University, PFLAG+ Perth, Freedom, the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia, Living Proud, Rainbow Futures, and various school staff.

The agenda for the event is as follows.

  • 4.30pm - Welcome and opening address
  • 4.45pm - Keynote: A young person’s perspective
  • 5.00pm - Moderated panel discussion: Intersectionality
  • 5.30pm - Moderated panel discussion: Peer educators’ perspectives on supporting LGBTIQA+ young people
  • 6.00pm - Moderated panel discussion: Parents’ perspectives on supporting LGBTIQA+ young people
  • 6.30pm - Moderated panel discussion: Educators’ perspectives on supporting LGBTIQA+ young people
  • 7.15pm - Closing address: Where to from here?
  • 7.30pm - Mix and mingle
  • 8.30pm - Close
