This practical session will help small-business owners and managers understand their WHS responsibilities and what they are reasonably expected to have in place. The session will cover:

• Common safety myths that can leave small businesses exposed, including assumptions that WHS requirements do not apply because a business is small, low risk or uses contractors.

• What business owners and managers are responsible for, including the practical steps they should take to manage safety when working with employees, contractors and subcontractors.

• What effective safety management looks like in practice, and how businesses can show that risks are genuinely being managed—not simply documented on paper.

• Psychosocial hazards in small business, including workload, role clarity, workplace behaviours, support and consultation, with practical and proportionate ways to identify and manage these risks.

Having clear, current and practical safety arrangements can also help businesses respond more confidently to client requirements, tenders, audits and contractor prequalification.

Sam’s approach focuses on helping business owners understand what they actually need in place, without overcomplicating safety or creating unnecessary paperwork.

Daniel Paxby is a senior workplace health and safety consultant and certified lead auditor with experience supporting organisations across a range of industries, including construction, healthcare, transport, utilities and manufacturing. Daniel works with businesses to develop practical safety systems that reflect how work is actually carried out. This includes helping businesses understand and manage psychosocial hazards such as workload, role clarity, workplace behaviours, support and consultation. Daniel’s approach focuses on strengthening the systems businesses already have and helping owners and managers feel confident that their safety arrangements are practical, credible and fit for purpose.
