An arvoning of drumming, dancing and singing with Salama.

Salama are a cosmopolitan collective of Indian Ocean natives &other artists of diverse origin that share a passion for Moloya, Reunion Island's traditional percussion-based music. Maloya has its roots in the Reunion's complex and painful history.

Concert 6-8pm @ Denmark Scout Hall

A family friendly musical spectacular. Rhythm, dance and vocally driven band Salama provide a dynamic, participatory and high energy show. See packaged concert and workshop tickets on the tickets page.

Workshops 12.30-4pm

Come and experience Maloya through rhythm, music and movement! Salama’s workshops offer a hands-on introduction to the traditional music and dance of Réunion Island. Participants will discover Maloya by doing it, playing, listening, moving and creating together. No previous music or dance experience is needed.

Adults’ Maloya Music Workshop 12.30-1.30pm

Get hands-on with the rhythms and instruments of Maloya. Led by Salama musicians, participants will learn some of the fundamental rhythms of Maloya, explore traditional percussion instruments and experience what it feels like to play together as an ensemble. No musical experience is needed, beginners are very welcome.

Adults’ Maloya Dance Workshop 1.45-2.45pm

Led by Muriel, this workshop introduces the grounded and rhythmic movements of Maloya dance and the close relationship between the dancer and the musicians. The music workshop will happen first, so participants who would like to stay can continue playing and accompany the dance workshop. It is a great way to experience Maloya as a living practice, where music, dance and people come together.

Kids’ Maloya Music & Dance Workshop 3-4pm

A playful and energetic introduction to Maloya especially for kids. Children will explore some of the traditional instruments and rhythms of Maloya, learn to play simple patterns together, and then get up and discover the basic movements of Maloya dance. It is all about having fun, trying something new and experiencing how music and dance come together in Maloya.
