Restoration Planting at Salmon Creek
Description
Date: Friday, November 20 (9:30 - 2:30)
Location: near Toutle, WA
Description: This year we continued instream restoration work at Salmon Creek, a tributary of the Cowlitz River near Toutle, WA. We installed woody structures to add complexity to the stream and planted native trees along the banks. The instream structures will improve habitat for salmon, Pacific lamprey, and other aquatic species while the native plants will add nutrients to the stream and provide shade which will cool water temperatures.
We need your help to get more plants in the ground! We will add several hundred live stake trees at our restoration sites along Salmon Creek.
Work Conditions: We will use planting bags and shovels to carry and install native tree live stakes. Please be prepared for lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, repetitive arm and shoulder motions, and walking across uneven terrain and along unstable stream banks.
Gear: Please bring appropriate layers for the weather, a daypack to carry your gear in the field, and enough food and water for the day. You will receive a complete gear list in your registration confirmation.
CFC will provide all the planting equipment including planting bags, shovels, and gloves.
Transportation and Vehicle Access: We will meet at Harry Gardner Park in Toutle, WA and caravan to Salmon Creek. We expect to encounter logging trucks while accessing our survey sites so we will get into fewer vehicles at the park to reduce traffic. Our work site is located on forest roads, several miles from the nearest paved road and lower clearance vehicles like sedans are not recommended. Please contact us at trips@cascadeforest.org if transportation is a barrier to participation. We can arrange carpools if necessary.
An Important Note about Communication: Please register with an email you check frequently. In the unlikely event that we need to change the meeting location or time or cancel the trip, we will contact you via the email on your registration. You will receive a confirmation email after registering. If you do not see it, please contact us at trips@cascadeforest.org.
