A tale of longing, desire and the courage of love

Rich with ancient Celtic symbolism, the folktale of Tamlin is an ecological fable that weaves sovereign faery queens and the protection of wild places, with more personal questions about love, choice and courage. The tale of Janet and Tamlin is a haunting and beautiful call to recognise the deepest desires of your heart, to stand steadfast in the face of doubt, so lost things might be found and restored to their true home.

At Halloween, when the veils are thin and the bridge between worlds is open, legends tell of the Wild Hunt, of the Faery Queen moving among us, and of mortals slipping into the Otherworld. These stories are remnants of older mysteries of the ‘Sidhe’ and the sovereignty goddesses, who pour life into the land. These forces are teachers, reminding us of the vastness we belong to. Tamlin speaks of our bond with the earth and the ancient accord between realms, where neither can thrive without the other.

The mythic realm offers sustaining nourishment and wisdom.

Janet, in her green mantle, fearlessly enters the forest crossroads to call her beloved home. Under her mantle she holds him as he shapeshifts, becoming a serpent, lion, fire, a coal. Still she does not let go, holding him within the embrace of her love determination, until he returns to his true self.

Janet's cloak is more than cloth,
it is a mantle of love,
a sanctuary, a green womb,
and the earth itself.

Her green mantle reminds us that we too can be steadfastly held in unconditional love, through times of immense challenge and change.

JACQUI BUSHELL has been dancing with the mythic imagination for much of her life, through her love of the wisdom held in fairy tales and her work as a spiritual herbalist listening for the voices of ancient wisdom and stories in the land. As a storyteller and teacher, she is passionate about encouraging others to explore their own mythology at the borderlands of psyche, body, culture and landscape.

Jacqui has been facilitating women’s circles, ceremonies, retreats, workshops and courses in Australia and internationally for over 30 years. Her work bridges mythic philosophy, embodiment practices and wild perception, deep journeying, and nature communion.
