Samphire, Seed and Slender-Billed Thornbills

Offers a visual, tactile and educational morning spent alongside coastal experts.

This experience highlights the importance of conserving an area like Port Gawler as guests will get to make “Saltmarsh Seed Balls” that will be comprised of an inert clay with three species of native seed, one of which is the seed of the Shrubby Samphire (Tecticonia arbuscula), a plant that the Samphire Thornbill requires almost exclusively for nesting. The other two plant species used in the clay balls will be Native Orache (Atriplex australasica) which has a regional rating of Vulnerable, and the more common Blackseed Samphire (Tecticornia pergranulata).

This is a collaboration between Green Adelaide, APC, National Parks and Wildlife and Friends of The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.

This event is part-funded through a Nature Festival regional micro-grant, generously supported by RAA and the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board.
