Refugee Welcome Zones briefing for Councils
Description
Join us for an online briefing introducing Sanctuary Runners Australia — a growing movement using running and walking to connect recently arrived migrants and refugees with Australians of all backgrounds, building genuine community connection at the local level. We'll share how the initiative works, what it can offer your council and community, and how you can get involved.
The session will also include a policy update on impacts of the recent migration system reforms for refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia — essential context for councils navigating this space, and advocacy actions your council can take to addresses issues faced by people seeking asylum in the community, such as homelessness.
Featuring the following speakers:
Paul Power, Co-CEO, Refugee Council of Australia
Gul Afroz Mohammadi, RCOA Refugee Ambassador. Gul was born and raised in Afghanistan and holds a Bachelor of Education and double master’s degrees in social work and public health. Since arriving in Australia in 2024, she has worked to empower refugee women and advocates for inclusive systems that recognise the skills and potential of newcomers.
Rebecca Eckard, Director of Policy & Research, RCOA
Dr Shaheen Whyte, Senior Policy Officer, RCOA
