Event description

The survival of the Maugean Skate is looking shaky, with the unique creature threatened by salmon farming in its own home, Tasmania’s Macquarie Harbour.

The federal government has rushed through amendments to Australia’s national environment laws, guaranteeing the future of the polluting salmon industry. It’s a threat to the skate and the world heritage area; and could encourage other destructive industries to seek similar special carve-outs in the very laws that are meant to protect Australian nature.

With a federal election around the corner, now is our time to turn up our campaigning efforts and help save the skate. We need to keep building smart, sustained, collective people power.

Join SIX for a packed hour of conversation with our friends from NGOs Environment Tasmania, Neighbours of Fish Farming and Bob Brown Foundation about how we increase the pressure on government, industry and business to help save the Maugean Skate.

  • Hear insights from campaigners who are on-the-ground in Tasmania on the salmon industry’s problematic practices, what scientists and community members are saying - and why this issue has significance for conservation nationally in Australia.

  • Explore the range of strategic activities that NGOs and their allies like SIX are taking to turn up the pressure on the government, industry and businesses - and how you can get involved. From rallies, petitions and community-building tactics; to meetings with MPs and Senators; to strategic shareholder activism, pressuring big supermarkets not to source their salmon from Macquarie Harbour.

  • Have plenty of time to ask your questions of our expert speakers:
    • Kelly Roebuck - Sustainable Seafood Campaign Director at Living Oceans Society and Vice Chair of Environment Tasmania
    • Jessica Coughlan - Environmental Campaigner at Neighbours of Fish Farming
    • Alistair Allan - Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at the Bob Brown Foundation
    • Adam Verwey - CEO and co-founder at SIX.

Given the time of the event, please do feel free to enjoy your dinner, a snack, a cup of tea etc. while you join the event.
