Saving seeds for our future: How to collect, clean and grow local native seed
Event description
Would you like to learn how to grow local native seeds?
Perhaps you’re planning a revegetation project and you'd like to grow local species that will thrive in your location?
Otway Ridge to Cape Landcare Group and the Shrub Club Community Nursery (Southern Otway Landcare Network) are excited to bring this workshop to you to share their knowledge about our endemic and indigenous Otways plants. Drawing on years of experience in collecting and propagating for projects all the way from Yuulong to Wye River, members of Shrub Club will be on hand to demonstrate and guide you through the process.
During the workshop you’ll learn:
How and where to collect seed legally and ethically
How to clean seeds and process them for propagation
How and when to propagate seeds and when to plant them
You'll also be able to take seeds home and some of the propagated plants from the workshop.
As part of the workshop you’ll get a chance to learn how to use Ridge to Cape’s brand new seed processing sieves, which were kindly funded through the Colac Otway Shire Community Grants Program 2024. After the workshop, current members of Otway Ridge to Cape Landcare Group will be welcome to borrow the sieves as part of their membership benefits.
What to bring?
Please bring thin gardening gloves, a notebook and a pen. Some gloves will be available to use if you don’t have a suitable pair.
Participants are also invited to bring any native seed they have collected on their property that they would like advice on processing and planting.
Tea and Coffee will be available at the workshop.
Please RSVP and let us know if you have any dietary requirements.
