Event description

Join us for the screening of Say Our Names, a powerful mini documentary that highlights the lived experiences of individuals whose names are often considered "tricky" or "foreign" in Anglo-Australian contexts. Through deeply personal stories, the film explores the impact of name mispronunciation in both educational and social settings.

This research-driven project emphasises the vital role of names in identity, belonging, and social inclusion, and challenges Eurocentric linguistic norms to promote more inclusive classrooms and communities. The project is proudly supported by the UTS Multicultural Women’s Network and funded by the UTS Collaborative Grant Scheme.

In addition to the documentary, we will also be sharing a Best Practice Guide to help foster inclusive practices in education and beyond.

Following the screening, refreshments will be served, and attendees are encouraged to stay for networking and informal discussion.

The screening will be presented by Dr. Zozan Balci, Chief Investigator for the Say Our Names project, sociolinguist, and social justice advocate at UTS. Her expertise in life history interviewing allowed her to conduct the interviews featured in the documentary, transforming research into powerful storytelling that is socially impactful.
