Sayyid Darwish: the People's Artist

He lived only 31 years, yet more than a century later his songs are still sung in kitchens, at weddings and on concert stages across the Arab world.

Sayyid Darwish took Arabic music out of the palace and gave it to the street. He wrote for porters, water carriers, labourers and dreamers, in the language they spoke every day. He gave Egypt its national anthem, and gave generations melodies they still know by heart. That is why he is remembered as فنان الشعب, the People's Artist, and as the father of modern Arabic music.

Guardians of Memory Forum, in cooperation with Arab Council Australia, invites you to a cultural and artistic seminar celebrating his extraordinary life and legacy.

The evening

• A look at the life and legacy of Sayyid Darwish, from the streets of Alexandria to the stages of Cairo

• A musical tribute performed by Dr Wissam Hamade, bringing his timeless melodies back to life

Maybe you grew up hearing these songs from your parents and grandparents. Maybe this is your first introduction to one of the great voices of Arabic music. Either way, this is an evening to listen, remember and sing along. Bring your family and friends.
