Event description

A Beginner’s Guide to Accessing Koala Data and What To Do With It

Did you know that koala habitat and sightings in NSW are all mapped in detail, and that it is a publicly available resource, searchable by address?

Sydney Basin Koala Network invites you to our webinar to show how environment groups and concerned citizens can access and use the NSW government's SEED portal to show the impact of planned developments on koala habitat. BioNet is a publicly accessible NSW Government Database and the SEED portal allows you to view this information interactively on maps via your computer. It’s not perfect, but it is an extensive resource that’s worth knowing how to navigate.

The webinar will cover:

  1. How to access SEED maps, including:
    1. How to add a location (street address / LGA boundaries / Development lot)
    2. How to add Koala Habitat Suitability Layer (from Koala Habitat Information Base)
    3. How to add BioNet Koala Sightings
    4. How to add all species sightings (colour coded by threatened species status)
  2. Guest speaker Cerin Loane (Special Council Nature) from EDO will talk to us about how best to utilise this information to advocate for koalas.

Note: SEED is accessed via the web and is freely available without a login. It is best to access SEED on a computer rather than a mobile phone. You can still join the webinar on a phone to watch the demo, and then try it yourself later on a computer. You do not need to download any specialist software to access SEED.

If you have any specific questions about accessing or using data from SEED, we kindly request that you submit them through the checkout questions. If you have questions during the webinar, you will be able to submit these via the chat.

The webinar will be held over zoom. Help on how to use zoom can be found here.

The zoom link will be emailed to registered participants.

If you have any questions, encounter technical difficulties, or need further assistance before or during the webinar please contact info@sydneybasinkoalanetwork.org.au
