SBW Ballina February Hub: Compassion in Business

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Come and join us in conversation with two incredible, compassionate local women, Sarah Rosborg of much loved local charity, Rafiki Mwema; and Emily Berry, CEO Northern Rivers Community Fund.

We’ll be exploring how to balance compassion with business, and how we as business women can contribute towards a better world.

Sarah Rosborg’s life was forever changed by two incidents: a trip to Africa, and a severe car accident a week later in LA. Returning home to begin rehab, Sarah couldn’t get the Kenyan children she’d met out of her head. She knew she had to do something to help. So she taught herself graphic and website design and used these skills (and her business, Castle Design) to raise funds and awareness for a charity she had visited while in Kenya, Rafiki Mwema.

Since 2013, Sarah has put almost every spare moment, energy and resources she has access to towards Rafiki. The charity has grown and developed into something truly incredible, now with multiple projects and initiatives, like the funding and building of Doyle Farm (which is now home to 70 children) and provides ongoing therapy to work through the trauma these children have experienced, while breaking the cycle of abuse for future generations. Or the outreach program, which checks on each child until they are 18 years old: ensuring their ongoing safety and education. Or the feeding program, which feeds around 80 street children each day.

Emily Berry is the CEO of Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) with over 25 years experience in business and financial management, operations and production; in theatre, documentary film, events, hospitality, and humanitarian aid. Emily is passionate about helping others to help themselves and believes in the power of Local philanthropy to make a real difference in the battle against disadvantage in regional areas.

The Women's Giving Circle is a current campaign by the NRCF bringing together Northern Rivers women to achieve equality and human rights for women and girls, and to enable them to realise their full potential. This campaign is aimed at raising a $1,000 donation made by 100 wonderful women, pooled together to create $100,000. The resulting monies raise will provide a $50,000 grant into the community and a $50,000 investment in the Northern Rivers Women's Fund.

In this conversation, Sarah and Emma will be joined by Sourdough Business Women Ballina boardmember, Felisimina Jom to explore how we balance compassion and empathy with business.

Together, they’ll cover:

  • The origins of Rafiki and NRCF
  • How Sarah’s drive for business was founded on being able to give
  • The story behind why NRCF started the Women’s Giving Circle and why the focus on women
  • What compassion means to them in the context of business
  • How to cultivate relationships with influencers and brands that benefit a bigger picture
  • What it’s like to work with a volunteer workforce
  • How you can support a charity in your own business
