• Who is J.M. Goldie?

  J. M. Goldie is Jan Goldie, author of The Broken Spell series. Jan writes fantasy and science fiction for teens and adults, and regularly runs creative writing workshops for aspiring writers.

• What is included in the workshop?

  The Fantasy Writing Workshop will include:

  • A brief introduction to the author and her world building

  • Discussion about world building and what that means

  • A fantasy world building exercise to kickstart your imagination

  • Time to write, with a creative prompt

  • Time to share your writing

  • A chance to begin developing a character to live in your new fantasy world

  • Tools and advice from the author

  • Plenty of time for questions

  • Snacks!

  • An opportunity to browse the author's books or get books signed

  • A free bookmark and other freebies (see questions below)

• Who can attend the workshop?

  This creative writing workshop is aimed at teenagers, but anyone 14 years and older is welcome to attend.

• What should I bring?

  Your imagination, a keen sense of adventure and a willingness to write fast. Feel free to bring your favourite device, note paper and pen to write with

• Have you run the fantasy writing workshop at this location before?

  Yes. This fantasy writing workshop was part of We Read Auckland last year and has been run in other libraries (We Read Auckland, Glen Innes Library 2026). It's been a lot of fun and very popular so we're running it again!
