Science Night 30: Black Soldier Fly Larvae Project
Event description
🪰 Can insects help solve our food waste problem?
The Seagull Centre, based in Thames, is pioneering an exciting new initiative in the Coromandel, launching a pilot project to explore the commercial potential of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as a solution for organic waste processing.
Using advanced technology developed in Finland and adopted in over 20 countries, the project will employ climate-controlled enclosed systems to breed BSFL. These larvae will process a variety of organic wastes, including food waste and biosolids from sewage treatment plants, converting them into high-quality insect protein suitable for animal and fish feed.
Louise Deane is the Project Lead of the BSFL Trial at the Seagull Centre, a community-owned enterprise that champions environmental innovation and social equity in the Hauraki district. With a strong background in community engagement, sustainable development, and project leadership, Louise has been instrumental in the conception and implementation of the BSFL Project. Her professional experience spans the non-profit, education, and social enterprise sectors, where she has consistently focused on empowering communities to develop practical, localised solutions to global environmental challenges. Under her guidance, the Seagull Centre continues to break new ground in waste minimisation, education, and regenerative practice.
