Description

Deep Dive Division is a Waikato-based underwater asset intelligence and marine technology company, combining commercial and scientific diving with robotics, environmental science, survey and advanced underwater data collection.

Founded in 2018 by husband-and-wife team Tua and Courtney Karalus, Deep Dive Division has evolved well beyond traditional commercial diving. Tua brings more than 25 years of commercial and scientific diving experience alongside a background in Environmental Science, while Courtney leads the company’s commercial strategy, partnerships and growth.

Together, they have built a specialist team that uses people and technology to understand what is happening beneath the surface. From ROVs, autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, sonar and 3D imaging to commercial divers and environmental monitoring, their capability makes underwater environments visible and turns that information into meaningful data.

Their work spans critical water and marine infrastructure, environmental monitoring, biosecurity, underwater surveys, salvage and restoration. Closer to home, Deep Dive Division has surveyed and removed vehicles and hazardous debris from the Waikato River as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting and restoring the wai.

As a Māori and Pacific-owned business, their approach is grounded in kaitiakitanga and a responsibility to leave the environments they work in better than they found them, bringing together technical capability, innovation, Te Ao Māori and Pacific perspectives.

In 2025, Deep Dive Division was recognised as Poutama Trust Hi-Tech Kamupene Māori o te Tau – Māori Company of the Year at the NZ Hi-Tech Awards.

Join us for Science Night #35 to hear Tua and Courtney share the evolution of Deep Dive Division, the technology changing the way we understand our underwater world, and some of what their team is discovering beneath the surface of Aotearoa’s waterways.
