ScienceTalks #2
Description
ScienceTalks #2 is the second in a series of sessions of short talks on experimental science for public benefit. This session features Dr Paul Callaghan from Australia's Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Dr Morgan Lowther from Robinson Research Institute (RRI), and Dr Gabriel Bioletti from OpenStar Technologies.
There is a free booking system to manage room capacity. Please join the waitlist if there are no more tickets available. This will help me know the size of the room to book for the next session.
All are welcome. The talks will be recorded.

We are what we eat? Why research into food safety helps the community. There are growing opportunities where the use of nanoparticle forms of bulk chemical materials can improve food shelf life, food properties, or potentially offer health benefits. But how are can we have confident and have trust in our regulatory processes to assess safety? This talk will discuss how scientific research improves standardised safety testing, using titanium dioxide nanoparticles (food colouring agent/sunscreens) as an example.

Zero-CO2 Steelmaking for Aotearoa Steel remains an essential material in modern life, from geothermal plants to seismic strengthening of buildings. But steelmaking accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions every year, using coal to strip oxygen from iron ore. Find out how we can decarbonise this process – and why New Zealand’s unique approach to ironmaking could make us a world leader in zero-CO2 steel.
Dr Gabriel Bioletti
OpenStar Technologies OpenStar is advancing fusion energy generation through the development of a levitated dipole fusion device, building on the Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) concept. This approach integrates high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets with an onboard superconducting power supply. Having successfully demonstrated the feasibility of integrating HTS magnets into the levitated dipole concept, OpenStar now focuses on an accelerated roadmap toward practical fusion energy. The levitated dipole concept features a highly decoupled system comprising a magnet and a reaction container, enabling rapid iteration of magnet technologies without requiring significant modifications to the reactor's core components.
