Event description

'Scones With Nanna' is a site-specific immersive play. It is performed in old houses, helping add another layer of cultural significance. It invites audiences into a space rich with history and nostalgia, allowing them to immerse themselves in the narrative on a more intimate level. The story travels through 100 years in time while Nanna descends into the shrinking world of dementia. It maps an important time in Western Australia’s history and explores themes of cultural identity, truth telling, and wicked humour in the face of adversity.

While Nanna makes scones at her kitchen table, she placates her troubled granddaughters as she tells her story of survival. She exposes family secrets that have been hidden for generations, in a humorous truth telling of a time when families were coming to terms with rapid changes while dealing with the trauma caused by the 1905 Aboriginal Act and how it forced First Nations mothers to make horrific decisions about what to do with their mixed-race children.

Written and directed by Gwen Knox

Performed by Elizabeth Narkle, Julianna Thomas, Shinade Mourambine
