Launch of the Scottish Environmental Journalism Network

We are launching a brand new network of journalists, writers, organisers, campaigners, students and researchers to improve the quality of climate and environment media in Scotland.

As the climate crisis intensifies a multitude of issues flood our timelines from: just transition to food precarity; from rewilding to land ownership; from community renewables to Rosebank and Jackdaw, from AI datacentres to water and air pollution. At the same time as these issues unfold a new backlash - a new form of climate denialism is at play.

How do we create informed media that responds to - and understands - these issues?

Drawing on inspiration from abroad, and recognising the need to scale-up and sharpen the output of environmental journalism in Scotland this project is an open call to anyone operating in these fields to join.

The network aims to bring together journalists, writers and researchers exploring the climate and nature crisis, and the creative and radical solutions to it.

It’s aim is a cross-pollination of research and journalism, skill-sharing and knowledge exchange.

At bi-monthly meetings, the group will meet to discuss the latest research and data findings, collaborate on publishing projects and share insights into stories and analysis.

This is a community of practice that will host bi-monthly meet-ups online and in person where possible. We'll invite speakers and experts as determined by the group. The first meet-up will determine the priorities for the next six months.

The project launches on Tuesday 20 October.
