Description

The second meet-up of a brand new network bringing together journalists, writers, organisers, campaigners, students, researchers and others to improve the quality of climate and environment media in Scotland.

As the climate crisis intensifies, a multitude of issues flood our timelines: from just transition to food precarity; from rewilding to land ownership; from community renewables to Rosebank and Jackdaw; from AI data centres to water and air pollution. At the same time as these issues unfold, a new backlash – a new form of climate denialism – is at play.

How do we produce media that helps create more informed conversations around these issues?

The Scottish Environmental Journalism Network is an open call to people working across different fields to come together and explore that question.

The network aims to bring together journalists, writers, researchers, organisers, campaigners, students and others exploring the climate and nature crisis, and creative and radical solutions to it.

Its aim is a cross-pollination of research and journalism, skill-sharing and knowledge exchange.

The network will meet every month, mostly online and in person where possible, to discuss the latest research and data, share stories and analysis, collaborate on publishing projects and exchange skills and knowledge. We'll also invite speakers and experts, based on what members of the network want to explore.

This is a community of practice led and shaped by its members.

About the Scottish Beacon

The Scottish Beacon is a collaborative network of independent, community-based publications from across Scotland. We work together on stories and projects that combine local knowledge with opportunities to collaborate across the country.

The idea for this new network grew out of The Power Shift, a Scottish Beacon project exploring Scotland's renewable energy boom and what it means for communities. As part of the project, we produced a special print magazine and brought journalists, campaigners, researchers and others together for a national gathering in Glasgow in April 2026.

That gathering showed the value of bringing people working across different fields together to share knowledge, ideas and perspectives. The Scottish Environmental Journalism Network is about creating an ongoing space for that to happen.
