Screams Before Silence: Screening and Discussion

This event will feature a screening of Screams Before Silence, a 60-minute documentary that brings together eyewitness accounts from released hostages, survivors, and first responders to explore the human impact of the October 7 attacks, including reports of sexual violence against women and girls. Through these perspectives, the documentary highlights the broader realities of conflict, including the profound toll on civilians and the ways in which gender-based and sexual violence can emerge in wartime settings. Following the screening, a discussion will provide space for thoughtful reflection on these issues, and for considering the responsibilities of communities, institutions, and global actors in recognising and responding to harm.

Helen Paterson is Associate Professor in Forensic Psychology at the University of Sydney. She investigates ways in which psychological research and theory can help witnesses and victims of crime. Her research predominantly focuses on best practice techniques to collect accurate and complete accounts from eyewitnesses, while preserving their psychological wellbeing.

Rita Shackel is Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Sydney Law School. Her research and professional work focus on women's and children's rights, with particular interest in domestic, family, and sexual violence, as well as access to justice and trauma-informed practice.
