Screening harmful content in student evaluations of teaching
Event description
LIVE WEBINAR
Facilitator: Cassandra Saunders, AAIR Surveys and Evaluation SIG Chair
Guest presenter: Rick Somers, Safe Student Surveys
Student evaluation of teaching surveys is extensively employed across the higher education sector to gather student feedback on learning and teaching. Whilst they offer valuable insights from the student perspective and crucial information for educators and institutions to enhance teaching, curriculum, and quality assurance, they also present challenges, including the potential for educators to be adversely affected by abusive or malicious comments.
In this SIG session we will be joined by Rick Somers from Safe Student Surveys who has developed a tool that screens for harmful content in student evaluations of teaching. The tool has been developed with the aim to help universities eliminate the harm caused through these surveys in cases where students provide harmful, offensive or discriminatory feedback. The software uses AI models and keyword matching to identify harmful comments with accuracy, precision and efficiency in order to reduce the psychosocial harm they cause, thereby making the higher education space safer. The webinar will include a demonstration of the software, which is currently being offered free to Australian universities.
