Screening: The Movie Teller (La contadora de películas)
Event description
As part of the celebrations marking 80 years of diplomatic relations between Chile and Australia, we invite you to a special screening of the Chilean film The Movie Teller, directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education) and based on the acclaimed novel by Hernán Rivera Letelier.
The 1960s. María Margarita is the youngest of four siblings living with their family in a mining town in Chile's Atacama Desert. The most magical moment of the week is Sunday, when everyone goes to the cinema to escape into other worlds. One day, her parents discover that María Margarita has a remarkable gift: an uncanny ability to retell the movies she’s seen. Her talent soon becomes known throughout the town and transforms the family’s fortune, just as Chile itself is on the verge of profound change.
Starring Bérénice Bejo, Antonio de la Torre, Daniel Brühl, and breakout young actress Alondra Valenzuela, the film was nominated for three Goya Awards, including Best New Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.
A heartwarming story about the power of cinema, memory, and imagination, told from the heart of northern Chile. Spanish with English subtitles.
