Swan & Scribble: Monthly Poetry Meetup
Event description
Let Your Words Take Flight at Swan & Scribble
A monthly Saturday sanctuary for thoughtful writing and shared inspiration. Swan & Scribble is a two-hour gathering where poetry flows, stories take flight, and creativity finds its community.
Whether you are a lifelong writer or simply curious about the poetic craft, Swan & Scribble offers a warm, accessible space for all levels. Each month invites you into a new theme—sparking ideas, memories, and connections to the world around us.
What to Expect
- First Hour: Guided writing prompts and creative exercises designed to awaken your voice. Facilitated by award-winning poet Lakshmi Kanchi (author of Lakesong), you’ll explore language, imagery, and the art of poetic storytelling.
- Second Hour: Open sharing circle. Read your new work, revisit an old favourite, or simply listen and be inspired. Every voice matters and every word finds its place.
Our focus is on quiet encouragement, honest exploration, and the joy of writing without pressure or judgement. Whether you craft a full poem or discover a single resonant line, you are part of the circle.

About the Facilitator

Lakshmi Kanchi (SoulReserve) is an emerging Indian–Australian poet on a mission—to make poetry accessible. She is the Chair of WA Poets Inc. and a Centre for Stories Fellow. Lakshmi's debut poetry collection, Lakesong, was published by Centre for Stories (WA) in collaboration with Red River Press (New Delhi).
Her poetry explores love and its tumultuousness, fantasy and zest in nature, and allegories that provoke thought and evoke tender feelings. Her writing anatomises the complex linkages between language, culture, history, and perception.
She has won the 2023 Ros Spencer Poetry Prize and the 2021 Pocketry Prize for Unpublished Poets. Her works have been shortlisted for the Heroine’s Prize 2024, Grieve Project 2024, and SCWC Poetry Prize 2023 and 2022. Her poetry has been featured in Australian Poetry Anthology, Social Alternatives, Portside Review, Burrow Journal, The Saltbush Review, among others.
She was the inaugural Poet-in-Residence at The Wetlands Centre (2022–23) and Writer-in-Residence at the Midland Courthouse (2024).
Lakshmi will also present new works as part of the upcoming visual poetry exhibition LAND ((WORD)) JOURNEY at Midland Junction Arts Centre in May/June 2025, in collaboration with four other artists.
