Welcome to Script Club, like a book club, but for screenplays, hosted by Kana Felix!
This is a space for us to keep learning in-community by reading scripts together. And if you haven't joined already click here to sign up for SC and be informed of future events.
This October you were assigned to read the terrifying self-contained horror feature script Babadook written and directed by Jennifer Kent. The writing has a strong psychological aspect, lots of mood/tone/voice, and speaks to monstrous grief. This screenplay was personally selected by our very special guest Ami Lum!! We'll chat about the writing of Babadook with Ami and then we'll answer some of your questions.
About our special guest:
Ami Lum, a seasoned story architect with over a decade of script editing and consulting experience, walks in lock-step with screen and stage writers throughout their creative process. As the founder of Break Out Sesh, she works with writers globally (LA, NYC, Canada, Ireland, UK, New Zealand) helping clients develop projects for industry giants like FX, Hulu, Netflix, and more. Ami's role blends script editing, story production, and creative midwifery, fusing analytical precision with creative intuition to safeguard writers' original visions. She is Chinese American with a heart of a fortune cookie—not overly sweet but always ready with a wise takeaway.
Additionally, she is an avid reader of horror scripts who paradoxically avoids watching it.
