What does a Script Supervisor really do on set?

Script Supervision is about far more than spotting continuity errors.

Working closely with the director and other departments, the Script Supervisor tracks the details of every take, monitors continuity and coverage, and records the information needed to ensure that everything captured on set can ultimately be put together in the edit.

Script Supervision has also been identified as an area of crew shortage within the Australian screen industry, making the development of skilled practitioners in this specialised role increasingly important.

In this one-day workshop, professional Script Supervisor Jacinta Taylor will take participants through the practical realities of the role — from preparing for a shoot and understanding professional paperwork and workflows, through to tracking coverage, continuity and performance on set.

Whether you're completely new to Script Supervision or already have some experience working in continuity on independent productions, this workshop offers an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the conventions, professional workflows and practical judgement involved in doing the job on set.

Using scripts, paperwork, scene examples, edits and footage from multiple takes, participants will learn to look at a scene through the eyes of a Script Supervisor and understand what needs to be tracked as a production moves from setup to setup and take to take.

What we'll cover

During the day, Jacinta will explore:

  • The role of the Script Supervisor — where the role fits within the production team and what is expected before, during and after a shoot

  • Breaking down a script — preparing for production and identifying potential continuity challenges

  • Professional paperwork and workflow — lined scripts, script notes, reports and communicating essential information to editorial

  • Understanding coverage — knowing what has been captured, what remains to be shot and what the editor will need

  • Continuity in practice — matching action, eyelines, screen direction, props, costume, hair, make-up and performance

  • Professional on-set workflow — understanding the Script Supervisor's responsibilities and how the role works alongside the director, 1st AD, camera, sound and other departments

  • Problem solving and judgement — recognising continuity and coverage issues and knowing what needs to be recorded or communicated

  • Real-world examples — examining scripts, scenes, edits and multiple takes to see how Script Supervision works in practice

Participants will have opportunities throughout the day to analyse scenes, identify continuity issues and work with the kinds of paperwork and information used by Script Supervisors on professional productions.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is designed for emerging filmmakers aged 16 and over, including adults.

It is suitable for people interested in exploring Script Supervision as a crew role, as well as filmmakers who already have some experience with continuity or Script Supervision on independent productions and want to better understand professional industry practices.

The workshop will also be valuable for directors, camera crew, editors and other filmmakers who want a stronger understanding of coverage, continuity and how decisions made during production affect the edit.

Some basic filmmaking knowledge or previous experience through a program such as the Next Gen Beginner's Bootcamp, Sunshine Coast Screen Collective Cadetship, or equivalent filmmaking experience is recommended.

About Jacinta Taylor

Jacinta Taylor graduated from Griffith Film School in 2019, was mentored by Carmel Leonard and has worked as a professional Script Supervisor across a wide range of Australian and international productions since.

From managing main unit continuity over multiple seasons, to supervising second unit and international units in Thailand and Japan, stepping into established productions as a day replacement, or joining as an additional Script Supervisor, her career has covered nearly everything from small-scale short-form to high-profile action features.

Co-facilitated by Next Gen Filmmakers

The workshop will be co-facilitated by Esther de Schone, Producer/Director with Aesop Media and facilitator of its Next Gen Filmmakers training program.

Esther has worked across a range of departments on independent film productions, giving her a broad practical understanding of how different areas of a film crew work together. Her primary on-set experience is in the Art Department, with Script Supervision as her second discipline, alongside her work as a producer and director.
