Sculptural Ceramic Class
Create a ceramic sculpture that commands space and expresses your creative voice. In this course, students will be guided through the process of designing and handbuilding large-scale coil-built ceramic sculptures. Whether abstract or representational, functional or expressive, this class offers the opportunity to explore form, design, and personal vision in clay.
Covered in this course
• Exploring sculptural design principles for large ceramic forms
• Planning and sketching for idea development and structural integrity
• Building large forms using coil and pinch techniques
• Strategies for joining and reinforcing complex shapes
• Surface development with texture, carving, and sculptural detail
• Preparing work for bisque firing, including drying and handling techniques
By the end of this course students will
• Design and create their own large-scale coil-built ceramic sculpture
• Gain insight into structural balance and sculptural composition
• Build confidence in handbuilding and construction techniques
• Explore surface refinement and presentation strategies
• Have the option to return for a glaze workshop

About the tutor
Luke is an accomplished ceramic artist and dedicated educator with a deep-rooted passion for pottery. With a Diploma of Ceramics and a Cert IV in adult education, Luke brings both expert knowledge and a strong educational background to his classes. His experience spans wheel throwing, handbuilding, and slipcasting, with work that includes both functional and sculptural ceramics.
Luke’s teaching philosophy centres on fostering creativity and skill development in a supportive environment. His approachable and patient demeanour makes learning pottery accessible and enjoyable for students of all levels. Whether guiding beginners through their first pinch pot or helping advanced students refine their craft, Luke is committed to nurturing each individual's artistic journey.
