Seagrass Discovery Day
Description
Seagrass Discovery Day
Saturday 14 November | 11.00 am to 2.00 pm
Okines Community House and Okines Beach, Dodges Ferry
Free
Join Friends of Seagrass Tasmania for a hands on day exploring seagrass, restoration and citizen science.
The day starts at Okines Community House, where you’ll learn why seagrass matters to Tasmania’s coastal waterways, why better local data is needed, and how community monitoring can help. You’ll hear about current restoration work, explore and analyse seagrass samples, and learn some of the methods used to monitor seagrass meadows.
After lunch, head to Okines Beach for the practical citizen science component. Participants can try seagrass monitoring, mapping and site scouting, with options to wade, snorkel or kayak with support from the Friends of Seagrass Tasmania team. Water based activities are optional, and there will be plenty to do on land as well.
All ages and experience levels are welcome.
What’s included
Lunch, tea and coffee are provided.
What to bring
Bring weather appropriate clothing, sun protection and a reusable water bottle.
If you plan to wade, bring sturdy footwear that can get wet or wetsuit booties, plus suitable clothing or a wetsuit. If you plan to snorkel, please bring your own snorkelling gear.
Accessibility
Okines Community House has good accessibility and the group will be based there until lunchtime. Accessibility is more limited once the activity moves to Okines Beach.
Supported by the TasPorts Community Grant Program as part of Landcare Tasmania’s Tasmanian Community Landcare Gathering 2026.
