Event description

Mentored Sewing Sessions with Sarah Seahorse

Bring any sewing project—or start something new—and get friendly, hands-on guidance in a relaxed studio setting. All skill levels welcome.

A  fortnightly social sewing space where you can drop in, get creative, and problem-solve your next costume, fashion piece, garment, or headdress... Come and work on your projects in a chill social environment with other crafters.

What to expect:

-Guidance on your project – Whether you're stuck on a tricky sewing step or need direction, Sarah will be there to help you.
-Social sewing – Learn alongside others in a friendly, supportive space.
-3 hour drop-in session – Stay as long as you like.
-BYO sewing machine, overlocker, and project – Or borrow a sewing machine - just reach out.
-No project? No worries! – If you're new to sewing, just come along and start with the basics- like a useful pencil case. You will be making your own outfits after a few classes!

Basic sewing equipment will be provided, a box of scrap fabric, and plenty of encouragement! If you need to borrow a machine- please reach out in advance.

Come stitch, create, and connect. ✂️✨

Fee: Price is based on a sliding scale, which you choose, based on your own income and how you value these sessions.

Facilitated by Sarah Seahorse - who is an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist, costume designer, milliner, craftivist and community artist. She specialises in fashion, headwear, and wearable art that serves as a powerful commentary on social, environmental, and political issues. Sarah was the resident milliner + art finisher at Circus Oz for a decade, she has won two awards at the prestigious World of Wearable Art Awards in Aotearoa,  has made hats and costumes for many of Naarm’s incredible performers, is a self described trash troll, lover of hats and recycled materials and loves to generously share her lifetime of creative skills within community settings.

A big believer in the transformative power of self-expression- especially in community or group contexts. Sarah aims to create inclusive spaces where people can engage in creative activities outside of formal education. Teaching from a Queer and Neurodivergent lens, she hopes to cater to different learning styles, with hands-on demonstrations + explanations. Please reach out if you have any specific learning needs.

This workshop will be held on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Merri Bek area. I recognise their continuing custodianship and care of land, waters and culture, and pay my respects to Elders past and present. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
