Seaweed Salon — ‘SEDIA 1’ CHAIR WORKSHOP with WEIGHTED LINES
Event description
A DESIGN SALON ON RADICAL, DIY CHAIRCRAFT.
Enzo Mari was one of the 20th century’s most influential furniture designers. Known for his radical approach to design — which combined a politics of communal responsibility with an aesthetics of practicality, Enzo believed that objects can communicate an ethics. His well-known “Sedia 1” chair is perhaps the clearest expression of this philosophy: designed to be built using simple tools and inexpensive materials, it offers an accessible, unpretentious and beautiful entry-point to design for everybody.
‘SEDIA 1’ CHAIR WORKSHOP
This intimate salon invites attendants to take part in constructing their own 'Sedia 1' chair using salvaged Oregon Wood. With Dave’s guidance, participants will learn about sustainable wood sourcing, Japanese hand tools, DIY construction methods and VOC finishings, all while also exploring the satisfaction that comes with socially conscious design.
There will be samples of rubio monocoat oil plus 2C, a non VOC linseed based oil in various colours to showcase the possibilities of timber staining.
PARTICIPANTS TO BRING:
- A hammer.
- An old towel.
- Drink bottle
A light lunch will be provided on the day.
Participants will take home their own constructed 'Sedia 1' chair.
ABOUT WEIGHTED LINES:
DAVID ALDOUS is a Northern Rivers based maker, artist, and carpenter working under the name WEIGHTED LINES. His work celebrates salvaged and repurposed wood, interpreting local form and beauty through the honesty of grain and imperfection.
“Everything in nature has a function and purpose; it’s our duty to maintain these ideologies in what we make.”
