Join us for an interactive 45-minute workshop on getting started with journal article writing, where you'll learn the fundamentals of academic and professional publishing.
Editorial Board member, Laura Burge (Swick Learning), will break down the difference between peer-reviewed and professional papers, and cover essential author requirements, ethics, and long-term writing habits.
Dr Friederike Gadow (Australian National University) and Dr Joshua Wang (Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital and QUT) will also join the session to provide their key tips and tricks, and answer any burning questions you may have about writing for JANZSSA.
Whether you're a first-time author or looking to refine your skills, this session will provide valuable insights and confidence to publish with impact. You'll leave with a clear action plan and resources to kickstart your writing journey.

About the Facilitators
Laura Burge

Laura is a Director at Swick Learning, and a driving force for student engagement, equity, and success in Australian higher education. She has held multiple leadership roles at Deakin University and La Trobe University and spearheaded professional organisations such as the Victorian Tertiary Education Primary Prevention Network (Gender-Based Violence) and the Asia Pacific Student Accommodation Association. She is a member of the JANZSSA Editorial Board. Her practice and thought leadership on positive cultures at Australian universities is highly regarded and followed throughout the sector.
Dr Friederike Gadow

Friederike (she/her) leads research and evaluation activities at ANU Inclusive and Respectful Communities, a professional unit that oversees equity, diversity, and inclusion governance as well as social harm prevention. She has a background in research, community services, and allied health and completed her PhD in disability studies in 2021. She is particularly interested in using qualitative, inclusive, and action-based methods to complement institutional research, which traditionally relies primarily on quantitative data. Friederike has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications, co-edited a scholarly book, served as a reviewer for multiple journals, and has been a member of the JANZSSA Editorial Board since 2022.
Dr Joshua Wang

Josh is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in research training and meta-research at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, and a Visiting Fellow in the School of Biomedical Sciences at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Prior to relocating to Taiwan, he worked in Australian higher education for nine years, most recently (2020–23) as the STEM Educator (Chemistry) in QUT’s Learning and Teaching Unit. His teaching and research focus on supporting diverse cohorts in the biological and health sciences. His educational research also examines injustice in doctoral education and scholarly publishing.
