Step into Browns Reserve and discover what it takes to create a thriving home for woodland birds.
Join local ecologists for a morning walk through Browns Reserve, a 45-hectare woodland reserve with a mix of remnant and revegetated habitat.
As we explore, we'll listen for firetails and honeyeaters and take a closer look at the grasses, trees and shrubs that make a woodland liveable for birds. Discover what a healthy, functional habitat looks like and what we can do to help restore it.
Twelve woodland bird species have vanished from the Mount Lofty Ranges, and another 78 are in decline, but there is an opportunity to change that story, Together, we can build a picture of what the Mount Lofty Ranges could look like, busy with diverse bird and plant life.
Learn about grassroots movement ReBird the Ranges which brings together more than 20 organisations taking nature-positive action to restore bird populations and habitat across the Mount Lofty Ranges, with a goal of restoring enough habitat to sustain more than 80% of the region's birds, plants and wildlife.
Bring binoculars if you have them. After the walk, join us for morning tea and a conversation about simple ways you can help create a future for woodland birds, whether that’s planting habitat on your own land, volunteering with revegetation projects, protecting remnant vegetation, or simply helping spread the word.

- How hard is the walk?
The walk isn't difficult, the trail is well marked and there are no steep rises.
- What if I don't have my own binoculars?
We will try to provide a couple of pairs but birdwatching can also be as much about listening as it is seeing! We will also be looking at and discussing plenty of easy to spot plants
- Can I bring my: dog, child, friend, neighbour
Absolutely bring a friend or two, carpooling will make your participation greener and more fun! Kids are also welcome and encouraged to come and spend time in nature with their community but sorry, no dogs.
- What birds will we see?
We'll find out together! Monarto has a rich diversity of woodland birds including the Peaceful Dove, Black-faced Cuckooshrike, Crested Bellbird, Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater, Yellow-rumped Thornbill, Grey Shrikethrush. We can't predict what will show for us on the day and that's exciting.
- What about Bird Flu?
We love our birds and want people to protect them, we believe this involves getting to know your local species.
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5 has arrived in Australia and is rapidly spreading amongst wild populations of birds. As this event does not involve handling birds or other wildlife there is no threat to human health.
As the situation continues to evolve, we will be monitoring outbreaks closely, if there are outbreaks in the area the event may be cancelled.
If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife, do not touch them. Avoid contact. Record what you see. Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
