Seniors Festival 2026: Discover the Gardens – A Guided Walk

Join us for two relaxed and informative guided walks through the gardens, each day exploring a different area. The tours will be led by Tina Thanos the Team Leader – Botanical and Urban Horticulture of Mount Alexander Shire Council, who will share her knowledge of the gardens, plants and landscapes. 

You can come along to one walk or join us for both! 

Both walks will follow the main access paths, making them suitable for people with a range of mobility needs. There will also be opportunities to stop and rest along the way. 

🌿 Day 1 – History, Lake Joanna & the Front Gardens 

Meeting point: Inside the front gates. 

Discover the history of the gardens and some of the fascinating structures that make them special, including the gates, fountain and other features. 

We’ll also explore the annual garden beds and take a closer look at the beautiful trees surrounding Lake Joanna, while hearing stories about the gardens and their history. 

🌳 Day 2 – The Pinetum & Rose Garden 

Meeting point: Old Tea Rooms car park. 

On the second walk, we’ll explore the northern end of the gardens, including the historic pinetum and some of the interesting and unusual trees growing throughout the gardens. 

We’ll also visit the rose garden and learn more about the plants and features that make this part of the gardens so special. 

Moderate involves walking as part of the activity around the venue, for example a museum or nursery.

It may involve a change in gradient like a slope or outdoor spaces with different surfaces to navigate. There is usually an alternate option provided to sit somewhere or stick to easier paths.

Outdoor activity: The tree and path symbol indicates there is at least part of the day that will be outside and to be prepared with appropriate clothes, outwear, sunscreen, sunglasses and hat or mobility aid if required.

No Toilet: This venue itself does not have a toilet. There will be a public toilet close by or at the place where you stop for morning tea.
