Spine-tingling stories come about as a result of exceptional interviews. The power in a personal story is in hearing the person’s own unique voice sharing their experiences - and it is the job of the interviewer to draw that out. But it takes confidence to ask the difficult questions, empathy to support a person though the retelling of their experience, and resilience to manage your own emotions when hearing challenging details.
We will cover:
What makes a good interview?
Trainees will receive some fictional transcripts as pre-course reading We will start this session by discussing our observations. We will identify the most common mistakes in an interview and the things that mark out a great interview.
Planning your questions
We share advice on how to plan for your interview, including the brilliant questions that will take your interview to the next level. You will then craft their own questions for a practical exercise.
Conducting your interview
Tips for conducting a great interview, including choosing your location, considering support requirements, building rapport and how to handle difficult situations

Catherine Raynor
Catherine has spent over 20 years helping organisations build the strategies, systems and processes needed for effective content gathering. She quickly spots barriers to planning and productivity and helps teams break down silos. In 2013 she founded the Story Network, the popular peer-to-peer learning and networking forum for charity story gatherers.
Ruth McDermott
Ruth has worked in story gathering for over 20 years, including senior roles at the NSPCC and the BBC. She specialises in trauma-informed, ethical storytelling and in ensuring people’s voices are heard with dignity and care. She advises organisations on how to work with lived experience voices safely and sensitively, advising on safeguarding, sensitive interview skills, and storyteller care.
