Event: Sensory Friendly Evening at the South Australian Museum

Travel instructions

The Museum is located at North Terrace, Adelaide, between the Art Gallery and the State Library. A tram stops directly outside the Museum otherwise other public transport options are available.

Entry instructions

For this event only the main entrance on North Terrace will be open. There is ramp access from North Terrace footpath to the Museum lawn area, and stair-free entry from that point. The doors are automatic and wide enough to comfortably accommodate mobility devices.

After entry instructions

Tickets will be checked in the main foyer and from there you are free to explore the Museum. There are stairs and lifts in both the World Mammals and Australian Aboriginal Cultures gallery. The Pacific Cultures Gallery on the Mezzanine floor is currently closed for a conservation project. Entry to the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year is to the right in the North Foyer. There is a slight incline at the entrance to this gallery.

Hazards

Some of the activity stations may be busier than other parts of the Museum. they will be open for the whole event so if it is crowded you can return later when it is quieter.

Toilet location

Toilets are on the ground floor via the Mammals Gallery. An accessible toilet is available. A parents’ room is also available on level 1 and includes a sink and microwave. The hand dryers are deactivated for this event and paper towel will be available instead.

Accessible parking

There is one accessible car park at the rear of the Museum, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Entry to the car park is through the boom gate on Morgan Thomas Lane, off Kintore Avenue. Please ensure your valid disability parking permit is displayed. If the park is already in use visitors can be dropped off at the rear of the building. Alternative accessible parking is also available at Wilson Parking, North Terrace (opposite the Museum), U-Park, Gawler Place, and along Kintore Ave. These are paid parks.

Lift Access

All exhibits within the Museum can be accessed with a lift available to all levels. There are two lifts within the Museum as follows: One located in the north-east corner of the Museum, accessible on the ground floor through the World Mammals Gallery. The other located in the south-east corner of the Museum, accessible on the ground floor through the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery.

Wheelchair and walker loans

Wheelchairs and walkers are available for use within the Museum. Please ask at staff on arrival to access this service. Wheelchairs and walkers are loaned on a first-come-first-served basis and cannot be booked in advance.

Sensory backpacks

Free sensory backpacks are available for loan on arrival. Each backpack contains a pair of noise cancelling headphones, a soft toy, and some communication cards. These are available for loan while stocks last and may run out.
