Sharpening and butter knife making workshop Sharpening your tools and keeping them in good condition is at the heart of successful whittling and carving projects. In this class, Carol will show you her process of maintaining good edges on carving tools, using simple inexpensive methods. It’s a matter of a little often to keep things well maintained. She’ll also give you strategies for rescuing tools that may have seen better days. The last hour of the session will be whittling a small butter knife and enjoying the carving process together. Please Note: All tools and materials are supplied but you’re welcome to bring along your town tools for advice, you may not complete all your sharpening in this session, the emphasis is on sharpening by hand and not machines. You can create a spoon with an animal such as a bird, cat of dog feature or perhaps a house or a boat is more your thing. Time permitting you can experiment with milk paint or charring to enhance your creation. It’s loads of fun customising your spoons. Beginners are welcome. This is a workshop for participants over 18. Then using an axe or froe split out billets for our spoon carving, and then progress to roughing out the shape of our spoon with a carvers hatchet. You may have just made your own blank in the first workshop, otherwise one will be provided. Using a straight bladed sloyd knife we will refine the overall shape, paying attention to making safe and controlled cuts. Then with a hook knife or gouges we will hollow out the bowl of our spoon. No experience necessary, all tools and materials provided, please wear covered shoes. This second workshop flows naturally on from the first if you’d like to be guided through the whole process from log to spoon. This is a great workshop for beginning or intermediate carvers. All tools will be provided. By the end of this workshop you should be able to carve a spoon at home with a few simple tools.
